Just Another Bend on the Road by Maria - June 2016 Scholarship Essay
In 2010, I decided to go back to school for my master’s degree in nursing informatics. I am a single mother of two beautiful children and I was also working full time plus a part time job in 2010. Being a single mother and working two jobs were already challenging enough but I was determined to finish school and I am happy to share that I graduated with honors in January 2013.
I always strive to set a good example to my children and help them realize that anything is possible as long as the person stay focused and determined. I thought my life after obtaining my master’s degree would come to a plateau but I was wrong. In December of 2014, I lost my job and in January 2015 I was in a car accident. I ended up having two major spinal surgeries and now disabled. I have a choice to accept that my disability is the end of my very promising nursing career or continue pursuing to do better.
I tend to choose the “road less taken” so I chose to pursue and do better because I know in my heart that time will heal me. I decided to enroll in Chamberlain College of Nursing and pursue the Family Nurse Practitioner degree. My greatest academic obstacles as well as financial obstacles lie ahead but I am again, determined to overcome these obstacles. My experiences in life trained me to stay focused, determined, and never give up. I learned how to plan and follow the different processes that I established to accomplish my plan despite life’s many challenges. My faith, love for my children, and love for humanity are pillars that will keep me strong in facing my future academic obstacles.
Winning a scholarship award from Varsity Tutors will be a dream of a lifetime! I will continue to believe that even disability cannot prevent individuals with disabilities from achieving their goals in life. With entities like Varsity Tutors, any academic obstacles will just be another “bend on the road.” As what Napoleon Hill once said, “whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve."
