My Nonprofit by Margaret - February 2020 Scholarship Essay

My nonprofit would help homeless people. There are a few food banks in my town, but there are no places for homeless people to stay overnight. My idea is to use my nonprofit to to create a place where homeless people (or people who simply need a place to stay for the night) can come to eat and sleep. At the end of the day, my hope is that homeless people can have a place to feel safe and secure. It is also my hope that people in my community can learn that homeless people are simply people, just like them, and that they should be treated with respect.
Through my church and the school my mom works for, I've been able to spend time with the homeless people in my community. I've realized that these people are just like you and me; they just happen to not have homes. I want to make sure that these people are treated with respect. I've seen people volunteer at the local food bank just to get a pat on the back. They spend the whole time making disrespectful comments about the people they're serving, and complain about being there. One time, I heard someone comment on the quality of the food that they were preparing. Someone responded with, "Well, these people should just be glad that we're feeding them". I decided then and there that I was going to make sure that there was a place that homeless people could go and be actually be cared about and respected. We should want to help others because they're our brothers and sisters, not because someone's going to tell us "good job" when we're done. That's what my nonprofit would stand for.
