Global Cries by Marakie - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
As society advances and new medications are being explored, underprivileged regions continue to be ignored. Developing countries such as my homeland, Ethiopia, do not have equitable access to medication, often relying on their Western relatives to send them supplies regularly. Those without family in the States are put in a jeopardizing position, praying their unnamed condition doesn’t lead to unforeseen events. Innocent families are not provided a basic principle that we deem necessary here: quality healthcare. Infants in Sierra Leone with sickle cell often cannot afford kidney dialysis, naming it the leading cause of infant mortality. People from my village, Nazret, are conveniently diagnosed with the common cold as their underlying lung cancer develops. The hospitals in South Africa are a breeding zone for infection, infested with microorganisms from the shortage of gloves and proper sanitary practices.
This lack of healthcare knowledge and accessibility in underserved countries drives me to center my studies toward global health science and administration. With this education I will advocate for my continent, joining Western government officials to create international reform. I am a witness to the healthcare disparities overseas and I realize the vitality of Western support. I will employ my privileges on this promising land to devise equitable international policies. By combining the sectors of globalization and economic inequities I intend to supply these countries with adequate medications and expand medical knowledge globally. I will restore the birthright of quality healthcare overseas, answering the aching cries of those in my beautiful, African continent.
