Perspectives 101 by Malik - January 2023 Scholarship Essay

Every fall millions of students from around the world arrive at their college campus to start their undergraduate education. With that, their varied views and perspectives on the world come with them. In my group discussion based class, Perspectives 101, first year students will be able to talk through their world views and cultural norms that they bring from their unique homes. This class will not only include daily seminars, but will also require students to interact with their classmates throughout campus. Exams will be conducted orally, and will test students on their ability to showcase their speaking skills, their ability to stay true to values, and their presence of empathy.

Putting these people through conversations that may be difficult will bring classmates together. Additionally, the thought-provoking questions that will be asked will showcase the true values and ideas of these first year students. Enabling these group activities will allow students to gain a better understanding as to why their classmates think the way they do, and will further their abilities to process the conflicts they will face at university through different lenses. This class will result in students growing their worldview and approaching issues in unique and effective ways.
