My life by Maleena - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

Birds chirping, horns beeping, the sun creeping over the horizon is the signaling of a new morning in India. The country with the second largest population in the world, booming to life as many had to get to work or as children had to get to school was always a great thing to wake up to. The air conditioner blasting cool air was perfect for me to wake up to because it was like being back in the United States.

For the last fifteen years of my life that I have been going to India, every five years, the condition of the country gets worse as the years pass by. I always stayed at my grandparents’ house, but the only sad thing about waking up in the mornings was looking outside the window to see so many homeless people sleeping on the ground with no roof over their heads to protect them from the unbearable heat or rain during the monsoon season. It hurt me to see how many people were suffering, and I was reminded of how fortunate I am to have even a small house and roof over my head. This is significant to me because India is the country that most of my family grew up in, and it is currently in a terrible condition. It was sad to know that I couldn’t do anything at all at this young age, but I wanted to make a difference in all the homeless people’s live.
