R and R - Relax and Read by Malcolm - March 2018 Scholarship Essay

My math teacher isn’t rich or famous but he tells us all the time he’s happy because of his job. He loves to teach and he does it every day. He is happy to be where he is, and this is why school is so important: when you read, when you learn, you are turning yourself into a better person who finds it easier to be happy. Being smarter and being happier are almost the same thing.
Do you think my math teacher would be able to do what he loves if he didn’t know any math? No way! He spent years and years reading math books and learning how to do all sorts of math, math so crazy it uses numbers AND letters! He’s one of the smartest people I know, and he always says the same thing about how he loves teaching, and he could do anything else but he doesn’t want to do anything else.
You may like math or you may not. You may like music, video games, or playing sports outside, and you probably want to know more about these things. Even if you don’t know what you really like, the best thing you can do for yourself now is to read, read, read. Read at school and at home. It doesn’t even matter what you read, so long as you enjoy it. The rest will come on its own. For now just relax and be happy, and keep an eye out for the things that make you really happy.
