What Has Made Me Who I Am Today by Makiya - February 2021 Scholarship Essay

As I typing this it is so much I can express into one sentence about who made me who I am today. I really don’t open up and express my feelings but I feel it’s time for everyone to know the real Ma´kiya Jones. My mom who I know is the strongest woman in this world where she lost her brother, mother, and father. The hardest moment for me was six months and three weeks ago I wouldn’t have been able to answer this question, I didn’t know who I was or what I was going to do with my life? Like my grandmother, Louella Jones, and Paula Randolph, was my role model and someone that I love. After my grandmother left me on July 21, 2020, I knew I had to change and become a better person for both of us.

I grew up really didn't have what other students had nor the easy one. First, my mother was a full-time mother and worked Monday-Friday. As I see her every day when I’m sleeping and going to work and even going to school to get a better life for my brother and me. My mother shows me that whatever you put your mind to that you can succeed in life. As anyone knows me, I hate asking my mother for money knowing that she is paying all bills and having to pay for school tuition for my brother and me. Unfortunately, I had to quit my job prior to grades slipping and knowing that my mother only asked for me to keep my grades up. I tried my best to do everything she asked because she always told me it's not easy to live without any diploma to back you up.

I love that you can see the everyday Makiya and I want to make a change to other willing successful people. I want to become an elementary school teacher and be the teacher that says, `` Success is what unites us and makes us better people in the future. My high school journey had its ups and downs but I made it show that I maintained my 4.0 GPA and made my grandmother and mother proud. Any scholarship is an opportunity to show every college my skills and what I'm capable of.
My skills though high are that I was on the president and principal list through 9-11th grade also 11th-grade class treasure, volleyball player, beta club,1000+ community service hour. I learned that tough situations make me work 9x harder because as for me, due to me having dyslexia makes me work. I also used to feel out of place when it was my turn to read in class. The words look different and I have trouble reading them. I want to set an example to anybody that is dealing with hard times or any learning disability that you can do it. This road wasn’t easy because I have to challenge myself every day throughout high school.
