Nursing - Why I Chose to Become a Nurse by Makiah - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

Fall 2023 is coming quickly and I am attending University of North Carolina at Greensboro majoring in Nursing. I chose to become a nurse for two reasons; my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020 and the world went through Covid. Who knew that we would go through a full blown years long pandemic? No one; but nurses are trained for this.

After watching my grandmother almost die from cancer in the midst of a pandemic and having to step up and help her at 14 years old I knew I no longer wanted to become a veterinarian but a nurse. I stepped up and helped my mother take care of my grandmother without hesitation and I know I can help others as well. It became my passion. I thought I wanted to heal or help animals but people need me more.

Covid also was a huge factor in deciding to become a nurse. Sitting at home watching helplessly was torture for me. I looked at my mom and said "I want to help, I want to do something. I'm becoming a nurse"! From that day I was determined to become one and within a few short months I will be starting college majoring in Nursing.
