Five Steps To Success Through The Eyes Of A Seven Year Old by Makenzi - March 2018 Scholarship Essay
The way I would explain to a second grader the importance of continuing your education would be by breaking it down into five simplistic steps that they would understand. First, I would begin by asking the students why they go to school. In response I'm hoping they say "to learn", if they are having a hard time understanding I will further guide them to the appropriate answer. After getting the second graders intrigued about learning I will then proceed by asking the students "What does learning help you do?" I will expect they will come across as confused not knowing the answer, so I would further guide them to understand that learning will "help your brain get smarter". I will then review the first two steps with the students. Once they have an understanding of those steps I will then move forward and say "once your brain gets smart, where do you want to go?" I hope by now that the students will start to grasp the concept of where I am going with this lesson. As to be expected, you will still have to further guide them and reword what I am asking them to get the answer of "go to college". By this point, it is common for their attention span to be exceeded, so I would have to draw them back in by starting to be interactive and ask them what they want to be when they grow up? This will then lead them to understand that they will reach their career goal if they go to college. Now, I will review the first four steps that we have so far. One, "you go to school to learn". Two, "learning helps your brain get smarter". Three, "when your brain gets smart you go to college". Four, "going to college helps you get your dream job". The fifth and final step, I would ask the class "who likes toys...everyone likes toys". Hopefully the students will become very excited then I will ask them "what do you need to buy a toy?" Their response should be "MONEY!". I will then further explain to them that in order to get money you need a job, so you can buy all the toys you want. We will then review the five steps one last time. One, "you go to school to learn". Two, "learning helps your brain get smarter". Three, "when your brain gets smart you go to college". Four, "going to college helps you get your dream job". Five, "jobs lead to money, so you can have all the toys you want".
These are actual real life answers from my seven year old brother, as I described to him the importance of learning.
