In a Nutshell by Makenna - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

For most people, senior quotes are a big deal. They think long and hard, asking their friends and family for quotes that really represent themselves. I do not get this luxury, however. I go to a Middle College, and we don’t have a lot of things. We don’t have sports teams, homecoming, or even a yearbook. I have never really thought about a potential senior quote, and I’m kind of glad I don’t have to have one, because composing a small phrase that encapsulates all of who I am is intimidating. When seeing the prompt for this scholarship, I will not lie, I went to Pinterest to look for quotes. I was unsure of the direction I wanted to take it, what parts of me to represent, but I think I found the one.

“She was real in a world of make-believe.” – Atticus

I have always been told that I am an “old soul.” I get along with people older than me as I do not have time for drama and prefer more intelligent conversations. I would also like to believe that I am one of the few genuine people left. I don’t lie, which most people don’t believe, but when I tell them how I really feel they quickly learn. Everyone seems so fake and jaded now-a-days it’s hard to find and make real friends. I feel alone though I am surrounded by people. No one truly understands me, I don’t even know if I understand myself, which makes it harder. I feel as though I am constantly trying to prove myself as being real when in fact everyone else are just too fake to believe, and it’s exhausting.

It took me a long time to fully understand that I’m enough. I’m okay the exact way I am, and there is nothing wrong with being alone until I find the right people. This quote brings to life how I feel on the inside, reminding myself that I am who I am for a reason, and I don’t need anyone else to believe it, except me.
