A World of Opportunities by Makenna - November 2017 Scholarship Essay
I have lived in the same small town for the past 17 years of my life. This town, with a population of about 10,000 people is the place I call home. For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed about traveling the world. In fact, I have been very fortunate to have traveled to Scotland, Ireland, and London as a student ambassador. While I was on this trip it felt like I was living in a movie. The architecture of the buildings, the different landscapes, and the scenery were all completely breathtaking. As someone who plans to pursue a degree in nursing I feel it's important to learn how other cultures live. Having the opportunity to pursue a healthcare career will bring me great joy, as all I've ever wanted to do was help people.
The opportunity to study abroad would help me view the world through others' eyes and it would give me a better understanding as to how people live. Throughout my life I have had access to food, water, and shelter. I haven't been exposed to the struggles other people might face on a daily basis. Studying abroad would enhance my social and academic skills. I will be introduced to new people and even new professors. I feel it would be a great chance to make new friends. Along with this, studying abroad could help to create more future career opportunities. Future employers might be more willing to hire someone with experience in different cultures. This can also show my future employers that I’m not afraid to be more independent while seeking out new challenges. I’ve usually been known to be more on the shy side and I keep to myself. However, I feel that studying abroad would be a chance for me to open up. I would be curious about my surroundings and would be excited to learn.
It is for these reasons and many more that I feel studying abroad would positively impact both my college education and myself as a person. This would be an incredible chance to become more independent and grow as a person.
