UniFIT by Makena - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
Extracurricular activities are a great way to get involved and enrich the high school experience. I have participated in various extracurricular activities in high school, including cheerleading, NHS, and Youth Alive. They have all made a major impact on not only my schooling, but my life! Because I place a high value on extracurricular activities, I put immense thought into developing a brand new one. After pondering this question, I decided that I would create an extracurricular activity called UniFIT, which is short for unified fitness. UniFIT would be a fitness club that focuses on including students with special needs. Fitness and exercise are known to be beneficial to nearly every aspect of life, and I think they should be accessible to everyone.
Last year, my school launched a Unified P.E. class that allows students with and without disabilities to participate in physical and educational activities together. This class was a huge success, but not all students have the opportunity to participate in it due to scheduling issues. My goal in creating UniFIT would be to allow all students to experience this inclusive atmosphere, without the responsibility of taking an additional class.
I believe this class would allow students with disabilities to feel empowered mentally and physically. Additionally, UniFIT would inspire all students to encourage each other through physical activity.
