In the Long Run by Makayla - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

All of your life you are told by your family, friends and teachers, “Get an education, it is important!”, but what they never tell us is how is it important? As students, we are so caught up in studying for that quiz, memorizing those vocabulary words, labeling that worksheet, getting done what has to be finished now that we forget why it is important. It is hard for us to see how the Pythagorean Theorem or Spanish idioms will help us in the future, it just seems like a waste of time, but it’s not.

Education is not about learning every single lesson and remembering every single concept. In my opinion, it is a way for us to expand our knowledge on what we as individuals like. If we never learned anything, how would we know what we wanted to do in life? That one class, or that one lesson that leads us to what we really want, is what is important.

Not only does education allow us to find ourselves and our personal likes, it expands our understanding of others. We can’t only learn one thing and excel in that, we must learn bits of everything and share and connect with others. Learning languages helps you connect with whole new cultures, learning physics helps you understand how your world works, learning history helps your understand your past and prevent problems in the future. Everything you learn connects you to the people and world around you, without that we would be nothing, and that is why education is so important.
