Creating a Highschool Extra Curriculum activity by Makayla - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
If I could create an extracurricular activity in my high school I would label a class "Professional Exploration". Within this course, students would be encouraged to take numerous steps in discovering different career paths. Research projects, career fairs, and shadowing professionals would form the foundation of the curriculum for the course.
Each student enrolled in Professional Exploration would have the responsibility of completing a research project with detailed statistics, reasoning, and day to day life of a career that intrigues the student. The project would serve as the final exam for the course however they would have the entirety of the school year to work on it. The grading scale for the project would depend on the quality, time spent, and accuracy of the research. Along with the individual project, career fairs would be supported once a month and serve as a way for students to create impressions on local businesses. Career fairs would be set up to benefit both businesses and students. Businesses would have the ability to get an insight on the next generation of workers that could potentially be employed through their company. Students would be able to grasp knowledge about different job opportunities as well as seek what professions interests their benefits and desires through talking with successful individuals from different businesses. A major expectation of the students in the program would be to set up a time to shadow a profession at least once during the course of the year to gain a hands on knowledge of a career they are researching. Shadowing helps students to experience real life events that occur in the occupation they wish to pursue. For many, a job is completely different when facing it in real life than the idea with held in their head of what the work is like. Shadowing can be the key factor in making final decisions on goals and actions taken to become successful and happy in life.
A course solemnly designed to expand the knowledge students have about different career paths would help them narrow down decisions and choose the best track in school and life to benefit them the most when they transition into the life of a worker. Along with this students would be able to establish a name for themselves before actually applying for jobs and businesses could grasp the concept of the next generation of employees. Professional Exploration would make these concepts understandable for high school students before they enter their college and working stage of life.
