Opening Up to the World by Makayla - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were a college professor I would teach Humanities. Humanities is a class meant to open young students minds as they begin to venture out into the real world. It teaches students that there are multiple ways of thinking, experiencing, and viewing situations. After leaving high school many students struggle with how to grow beyond their childish ways and learn, this class helped me to move past that.
When I first entered college, I was extremely shy and was not willing to participate in classes. I did my work but I failed to engage myself while in the classroom. After a few weeks, however I began to open up in my Humanities class. It was the class I was not looking forward to in the beginning, but it was a requirement for my degree plan so I had to stick with it. As I listened to my professor speak and engage with other students during her lessons I realized that maybe my way of thinking was not the only way. By the end of the semester in the class I was able to understand that I did not always have to be right or argue my opinion just because I thought is was the only relevant one.
I believe that teaching Humanities class would aid me in continuing to grow and learn more about myself and others. Even more importantly, I would be able to share and hopefully recreate my experience for new incoming college students. Every student should have the opportunity to learn more than just math and science, Humanities is a class that helps students find themselves and have an open mind. I believe that this required class once dreaded going to is a class that every student should be able to enjoy. Humanities opens students' minds and that is something everyone could use a little bit of.
