Residency in an Interesting State by Makala - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

We all see ourselves somewhere in the future. Some people dream of obtaining their lifelong career goals. Others see themselves starting a family and having a small job. That’s just it though, each and everyone of us see something different. I have a strong idea of where I see myself in ten years and my education will definitely help me.
Ten years from now, I will have completed my Bachelors degree of four years and also my medical school of four years. After medical school, I will enter a residency program in general surgery. Such programs generally take five years to complete and are designed to give a thorough background in preparing for and conducting common and complex surgeries. Focuses of residency programs can vary, and they allow you to gain extensive operating experience under supervision and provide continuous quality patient care before, during and after surgery.
The section of Pediatric Surgery has developed a two-year teaching curriculum with the philosophy to maximize the educational benefit of the pediatric surgical trainees, surgical residents, research fellows, and third/fourth year medical students. Each Friday morning, a weekly Mortality and Morbidity conference is held, which include the presentation of surgical statistics for that week and a review of in-patient management. Each week, the resident is expected to present patients that have sustained complications, errors in diagnosis, and deaths. The Chief Resident is responsible for the organization and assignment of presentations by faculty, general surgery residents, and medical students for the weekly pediatric surgery conferences. These conferences consist of didactic presentations and usually involve topics pertinent to patients with surgical problems being managed by the surgical service at the time. The department provides computer hardware, software and any audio visual aids needed for these presentations.
My education leading up to this point is extremely important. I will be on my way to achieving my goals to become a pediatric surgeon and help those in need. All life is precious and everyone deserves to reach their desired goals. It is within me to help sick children reach those particular goals.
