How Her Lessons Impacted My Life by Maggie - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to be taught by a number of amazing teachers. They have all influenced my life, and have taught me many important lessons. This past year, my senior year of high school, I was greatly impacted by my chorus teacher. For the sake of her privacy I will call her Miss Y.
When I was about fifteen years old, I began taking piano lessons from Miss Y. Right off the bat I formed a good opinion of her. She is by far one of the sweetest and most humble people I know. There is never a moment when she is not willing to sacrifice her time to accompany me so that I can run through a song or just talk with me about how my life is going. I am truly blessed to have had her as a teacher.
This year, the particular group of students in my choir class were not the best behaved. Instead of raising her voice and yelling to get us to calm down, she applied a different tactic. She would simply tell us to stop talking and come stand in a circle in the middle of the room. I, along with my classmates, were taken off guard the first time she did this. With looks of confusion, we all made our way to the middle and stood there. Then she did something that made a lasting impression on me. Miss Y told us to hold hands and then she prayed over us. The lesson she taught me by doing this was that the best way to solve any problem is to come before God and ask him to come along side us and walk through our trials with us. There is never a problem too challenging for God to fix.
As I stated at the beginning of my essay, there are many lessons I have learned from a number of great teachers. The ones I learned from Miss Y, however, have greatly shaped my life. She is truly an incredible told model and I am so privileged to have been taught by her.
