Overcomer by Maggie - June 2016 Scholarship Essay
My class was the first freshman class to go to our high school for four years instead of only three. As I was enrolling in my classes for my upcoming year, I noticed that there was one sole class that was Advanced Placement, or AP, offered to freshmen. I considered the challenge of AP Human Geography long and hard before eventually signing up to take this advanced course, and I had no idea what was coming my way.
The first few days of the class were fairly easy, but as the year evolved on, the work piled up and the class required even more deep thinking. I had never taken a class higher than Honors, so I was new and swamped. It also didn't help that I didn't fully understand the class curriculum. Eventually, I worked through one of my hardest assignments, and the year began to get easier. I started to understand the class more and how to work the ropes of an Advanced Placement class.
The course ended up being pretty fun, I met new people and learned so many new things. The second semester final was one of the most interesting projects, we had to design an Olympic village for a city that we chose. I got a very good grade on the project, and in the made up simulation for this project, my city made it to the top three cities that could possibly host the 2020 Olympics of our class! I got an A on the project and ended up earning a B+ in this tough class. I'm glad that I challenged myself to work hard my first year of high school and prepare myself for other opportunities that my education would bring me.
