“What do you want to be when you grow up?” by Magdalena - August 2022 Scholarship Essay
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” asks every single person including your parents, your high school teachers, your tutors, and more. That is a question that not everyone can answer right away. I was that one person who was not able to answer that question due to being interested in so many different fields. But over the years, I have realized that even though I may not know exactly what I want my career to look like, I do know what my strengths are and what I am good at. So when I first started my classes at Marquette University, I focused on my strengths and focused on how I can employ those strengths for the better. I then attained manager roles and leadership roles both on-campus and off-campus. After exploring these roles, I became fully aware of what my career goal looks like.
My main career goal is to become an International Human Resource Director. Now let me take a step back, in order to accomplish my dream goal, I first have to focus on the steps on how to reach that goal. To become an International Human Resource Director I first plan on becoming a Human Resource Generalist to gain more experience in the Human Resource Department. Even though I have received plenty of experience working in leadership and management roles, I believe that there is always room for improvement. That’s where the Masters of Human Resource Management Program at Loyola University came in.
I decided to accept the Masters of Human Resource Management Program at Loyola University due to it containing classes such as human resource development, employment relations, business ethics, and more. I believe all of the course materials that the Master of Human Resource Management program provides will allow me to grow and deepen my knowledge in leadership and managerial roles. All of these classes not only will help me improve myself, but will also help me further understand how I can use the skills that I’ve gained to help corporations and organizations accomplish their goals successfully. I see this program as an opportunity not only for me to grow as a student and leader, but also for me to help the program grow as well. I believe in the win-win situation, where you both take and give. This program would help me develop the skills and knowledge I need to accomplish my goals, while also helping the program grow by contributing my thoughts, perspective, beliefs, experience, and more.
I now am struggling financially due to the cost of the program. That is why I am applying for as many scholarships as possible to help me get through graduate school. As a first-generation student, I view every single class, job, and connection as an opportunity to grow since my parents did not have such opportunities as I do now. That is why I am taking a leap of faith and applying to this specific scholarship to further help me reach my goals. As Ursula K. Le Guin states, “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end”.
