Making A Difference In A World History's Classroom by Maelynne - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were a college professor, I would teach World History. In every history class I ever took, my professor emphasized the importance of history because of the amount of knowledge it contains which can prevent or aid a resolution many problems we face in the world today. History does repeat itself in more ways than one and it is vital that we understand past events to ensure present and future events are not mimicking failed, or destructive past events. History cannot only teach us about negative events, but also positive events such as growth and success. No matter what we are seeking to learn and understand about history, answers to our curiosity can be found from events worldwide.
Curiosity is what encouraged me to learn about World History and it is why I would choose to teach it if I were a college professor. I believe it would be my duty to future generations to share my knowledge and understanding of what current events are resembling those of the past. Thus far in my educational career, history has given me a greater perspective of how the world continues to redefine itself. World History is much more than the twenty or so chapters most classes I took tried to cram in two semesters. I would encourage my students to learn about their ancestry, to learn about a country that has a name too hard to pronounce, but mainly to take as much time as needed to learn about whatever it is about World History that makes them curious, at their own pace. Not taking the time to properly understand and learn history is what results in negative historical events to repeat. World History took a very long time to become history, so it will take time for students to piece areas and events of history together.
Today, events from around the world are becoming history. It is up to mankind to determine what we do with the knowledge we have about history the world has allowed us to create. That is why I would choose to be a professor of this course in hopes of spiking curiosity from within my students to pursue making a positive difference in our World's History.
