Personal school changes by Madysen - September 2023 Scholarship Essay

I know my school tries hard to make campus a great place and comfortable environment for everyone that comes on the premises. Overall I cannot complain too much about the state of my school but there are a couple changes that come to my mind that would be nice to add to better the area.
The first thing that is on the top of my priority list is to make our campus have more inside parts for our classes. South Albany High School campus blueprints were originally made for a California school but were brought to be built here. But the problem about this layout is that in California the weather is typically really warm and sunny with the occasional rain and wind. Oregon on the other hand is almost always rainy and windy with the occasional sunny and warm days. So having an outside campus gets students sick easier because of the lack of covered inside halls, which leads to more kids missing school.
Along with the change of adding more inside campus areas, I would also like to add more inside eating space. The commons building is always full of students during breakfast and lunch to the point that it gets hard to walk around and hear while inside. Us students that cannot fit in the cafe have to eat outside where there is not a lot of seating. But there are not really other alternative options. Most teachers use lunch as their break time so students are not allowed to eat in their room, but we also are not allowed to sit in our cars and eat. This led to most of the students eating in the cold rainy weather, which is why I would like to make a bigger inside commons area.
The other serious yet positive change I would like to make at my school is how much we prioritize AVID and being a showcase school for it. This may be a little biased because I have been in AVID for the last 4 years and still taking it this school year but while in class during showcase weeks the teachers focus more on looking good than how the work fits with the students learning style to help them understand. What I would like to change about this aspect about school is just that students and our learning stay the priority even during the time that AVID and our teachers are being graded for how well it functions.
Even though I have these little changes, I still love my school. It has good teachers and is always kept clean. Along with that there are no outrageous expectations for students. Some people may have more changes or something little to change but I just focused on the big and important things to me that I thought would better our school the most.
