Structure Can’t Hurt, Right? by Madison - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
Leaning against the french doorframe to the porch and looking into the darkness where the sun set hours ago, I remember it all so clearly. The first whipping gusts of cool air tug on the ends of my hair and the sleeves of my sweater; the fizzy carbonation of my sparkling grape juice tickles the tip of my nose as I take a sip. A smile creeps up the corners of my mouth and memories of my childhood dance in my head. But, this is better.
I’m waiting for the show, as my boyfriend and his father walk out on the dock over the marsh ready to light a glorifying display of fireworks and roman candles. And as I watch, I can’t help but think that I am the most content here. More content and happy than I can ever remember being… and not just in this physical time and place, but in the aspect of my life. It’s been a great year, with many accomplishments and many struggles. But, as the final explosion lights up the sky, the clock strikes midnight, and the ball drops on the T.V. in the living room broadcasting the live event in New York. Everyone cheers, and I shout, “Happy New Year!”
My resolution last year was to make it into one of the schools of my dreams, and I did that. This year, though? I decided that my New Year’s resolution would be to set a schedule for myself. This way I can have a well structured sleep cycle by going to bed around the same time every night (if possible) but waking up at the same time every morning, and I can also implement physical fitness into my daily routine. I believe that physical activity is very important for everyone, but during my high school years and my constantly busy schedule, I found it hard to “find the time” to do so. But, then again - that could also just be an excuse I keep telling myself.
I’m not going to militarize my life and dedicate each minute to a task, but I think that implementing more structure in my day to day activities will help me in the long run. And how do I think that this will aid in my being a better student? Well, obviously if I get up at the same time everyday and consistently get enough sleep, then I should have no trouble getting to classes on time and being more awake and alert no matter what time those classes may be.
This increased energy and alertness will help me further network myself and present a more friendly personality to my professors as well as classmates, if you know what I mean! It’s always difficult to be your absolute best when you can barely keep your eyes open. With structured time for physical exercise, I will have more energy to make it through the day, and stronger concentration, as well as the physical strength to walk to classes across the campus with a quicker pace and less fatigue. I will also dedicate a day of the week for cleaning and simple chores around my dorm, such tasks may include: cleaning the bathrooms, cleaning the kitchen, dusting, taking out the trash, dishes, cleaning the refrigerator, sweeping/vacuuming, getting the mail, etc.
While I’m still at school to have a good time and learn, I’m dedicated to preparing myself for my future and being a strongly independent individual. And, with implementing this new structured lifestyle, I think many aspects of my life will improve - one of them most definitely being my life as a successful academic.
I want to thank Varsity Tutors for helping students, such as myself, achieve their dreams. I also strongly support and thank you for the wonderful tutoring and standardized test preparation that you provide for students who truly wish to improve. I am passionate about my studies and work hard to meet goals. I started high school with grades that didn’t accurately reflect my dedication to my academics; however, with hard work and diligence, I graduated in the top 10% of my class. Being able to receive this scholarship would help me tremendously to secure my future in education.
