What is Your 10-Year Career Plan? by Madison - March 2020 Scholarship Essay
My career has been in the forefront of my mind since I was in the seventh grade. Through research, family input, and my desires in a career, I determined that I want to become a registered nurse by acquiring my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) then further my career as a nurse practitioner.
During my senior year, I received certifications in phlebotomy, CPR, and EKG. After graduating this May, I will work as a phlebotomist for the summer at a nearby rural clinic until I enter college in the fall. In addition, having been told my entire life by my parents that I would have to pay for my college, I will continue applying for student loans and assistance for college.
I will attend Southern Arkansas University this fall. Acclimating to university life and diligently studying for my classes will be my top priorities for the first year. In addition, I will work part time at a clinic or hospital. Year two will be the same. For the third and fourth year at SAU, my courses will be in strictly in nursing. Then of course, I will graduate with my BSN.
During my fifth and sixth year, after finishing my BSN, I will obtain a master's degree in nursing with a Nurse Practitioner (NP) degree. During my NP degree, I plan to specialize in gerontology and family care.
For the year’s seven through ten, I will work in a rural clinic or hospital. Gerontology is my passion. For the past two years, I have helped care of my great grandfather on my time off until he passed away. I realized the need for expert care, compassion, and understanding for our elderly. My great grandfather is what brought me the love for geriatrics. Hopefully, by this time, I will have reached financial stability and paid back all of my student loans.
