The Importance of Food, Nutrition and Wellness by Madison - June 2018 Scholarship Essay

High school is the place where we as students are expected to gain more knowledge and independence. We are enrolled in classes, ranging from foreign languages to academics to physical education. All of these are provided and encouraged as a way for us to further push ourselves in an attempt to be prepared for college and becoming an adult. However, whenever we wake up in the morning, before we can focus on what math equations we need to remember for the test or which gym shorts to pack for the mile run, we all share one common routine: breakfast. This leads me to the elective I believe should be a required class for all: food, nutrition and wellness.
Food, nutrition and wellness was one of the most impactful elective courses I have taken, because I learned about so many different things. The class covers how to have proper nutrition for your body, how to cook different foods, how to safely use kitchen utensils and machinery and introduces you to how foods and cultures intertwine. Our society, especially students, eat out at fast-food or sit down restaurants a lot. This class reminded me how the foods that are cheap and convenient are not always to best to be putting in our bodies. In addition to homemade meals being healthier, they are also more cost friendly. While a home-cooked meals ingredients may seem like they cost more, it actually turns out to be cheaper, keeps you feeling full longer and gives your body the nutrients it needs to stay strong. Fast food is the simple, cheap option, which becomes not so cheap when choosing to eat out 5 to 7 days a week.
In conclusion, requiring students to complete a food, nutrition and wellness class would give them necessary life skills that would carry well into adulthood. The curriculum learned throughout the elective would benefit their personal health, financial outlook and one day, will allow them to provide healthy, budget friendly meals for their family.
