Favorite Volunteering Experience by Madison - May 2018 Scholarship Essay

I am currently involved in four organizations that are all about volunteering. These organizations have helped shape me into the person I am today. They have taught me the importance of “giving back”. Their passion for community service has been passed onto me and I will pass the same commitment to the next generation.
Being a young African American woman, I feel strongly that we have to take care of our communities. If we don’t care about those less fortunate, who will? They need our help just as much as we need them. This past Christmas, some fellow teen members and myself, volunteered at a nursing home. There we helped some of the seniors paint ornaments and at the end we sang Christmas Carols and gave everyone a gift. The best part about this event is seeing how happy they were when we surprised them with a gift; one lady even cried. I felt an overwhelming sensation of joy and love after participating in this event. I went home believing I just did a good deed and that I fulfilled my goal of putting a smile on someone’s face that day.
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people
will never forget how will made them feel.” The powerful poet, Maya Angelou and
her words, have been the inspiration behind my community service. I know that
being involved with the community is going to be a lifelong commitment.
