Write It Out by Madison - May 2016 Scholarship Essay

Triumphant and content with the difficulty of her masterfully crafted exam, my Honors Chemistry 2 teacher passes out the second semester final to the classroom full of her anxious pupils. As the five page thick test slides onto my desk my eyes scan it in hopes of finding recognizable information. My right hand grabs one of my three mechanical pencils and I lean forward wondering if the information I studied would be the information wanted on the exam. My eyes scan the page full of questions and my mind is taken back to the long hours of studying I did in preparation for this moment.
In order for a person to properly study and retain information efficiently they must first know what type of learner they are. Once this is achieved a person can more adequately study and have a higher chance of remembering what they are learning when the time comes for an important exam. In my eighth grade year my teacher had us take an online test helping us figure out what type of learners we are. Through this I discovered that I was Read-Write Learner. This means that the best way that I can learn and remember information is to write everything out and then read it repeatedly.
For most tests I tend to review previous notes that I’ve taken and try to memorize them. Finals, however, are much more important and require a lot more information to be recalled. So when the time comes to study for my finals I take a large notebook and begin handwriting the questions and answers for the study guides for all of my classes. Once I finish writing out all of the information I need I then go back and reread it until I feel that I know the information. Another thing that I sometimes do is have people quiz me on the questions and then the ones I get wrong get marked with a red pen. I then repeatedly get asked these questions until I get all of them right.
I believe that the best way for any person to study would be to figure out what type of learner they are so that they can adequately assess the best way for them to study.
