Study Abroad by Madison - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

I do not believe that all college students should be required to study abroad during their post secondary education. Students should not be forced to do something that is at their own expense and many students just do not have the time during their busy college career to take time out of their daily lives to travel for their education.
Many students nowadays have to finance their own college education by taking out an enormous amount of student loans and are dealing with being in debt for many years following college graduation. Many students who finance their own college education simply cannot pay thousands of dollars to study abroad during their college career. Making this a requirement for students would create more student debt in this country. That is one reason why I believe that colleges and universities should not require students to study abroad.
A lot of college students just cannot take the time out of their daily lives to travel overseas for their education. These students could be dealing with issues back in their hometown or they simply just do not want to be that far away from their family, friends, or their college campus. Many students love that “college life” and do not want that to be taken away from them while studying abroad.
Some may say that studying abroad is a great experience for college students. However, others say that the cost outweighs the experience, which I would have to agree with. Many students just do not want to be in any extra debt than they have to be. Being in all of that extra debt could lead to things being put off to when the debt has decreased significantly. For example, a wedding, purchasing a car, and buying a first house could be postponed later in life. Especially for the students who what those valuables soon after college graduation.
