A Little Bit of Both Worlds by Madilyn - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
Most people fall in to one of two categories: being a “morning person” and enjoying getting up early, or being a “night owl”, and preferring staying up late. Weird thing is, I don’t exactly fall into a certain one of these categories. I do sometimes feel like getting up early, but I’m not strictly a morning person. At the same time, I have my days that I just prefer to get things done by staying up late.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gone through phases of switching between being a morning person and a night owl. When I was about eight, I was a total morning person. Every day without an alarm, I naturally woke up at six in the morning. After that, I got ready for the day, did my chores, practiced the piano, and finished in time for breakfast as the rest of my family began to wake up. The crazy thing was, I was home schooled at this point in my life, so I didn’t actually need to get up early for school, let alone as early as I was waking up. Oh, and I also went to bed at eight every night, so I was for sure a morning person.
As I got older, somehow, I turned into the type of typical teenager who loves to stay up late and sleep in. Every weekend, I always slept in until nine or ten, and went to bed around midnight. Honestly, I’m not sure how I went from the type who wakes up early every day to a teen who just wants to sleep in.
Now, as a senior in high school, I’ve finally evened out my sleep schedule a little bit. I now wake up early, but not quite as early as I did ten years ago. I also like to sleep in on the weekends, but no later than nine.
Being not quite a morning person or night owl, but some sort of weird mix, I find that I can be productive throughout the morning, as well as at night. Mornings for me are usually a great time to get my schoolwork done, a time when I feel clear and focused. That being said, there have also been plenty of times where I’ve chosen to stay up late doing homework, rather than waking up super early the next day. Being able to be productive no matter what time of day is actually pretty nice.
