Ready, Set, Change! by Madelyn - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

If I were to give a tour of my high school to the incoming freshman class, I would guide them through school, showing them typical things: the gym, library, cafeteria, among other things, but I would also show them the good water fountains, tell them about the best school lunches, and share many more things that students experience during a school day. I would tell them not to be so afraid of the seniors; most of them are only paying attention to the graduation date. More importantly, I would give them these words of advice: be ready for many changes.
Aside from the obvious changes like age, maturity, height, and many others, high school can bring an onset of multiple adjustments. Believe it or not, losing, gaining, and reconnecting with friends is apart of the high school experience. Personally, I met my best friend in my freshman year computer class, and we’ve stayed best friends all through high school and might even go to the same college. On another note, I’ve also had friends all through grade school and junior high that I am not so close with anymore. Despite these changes, I would tell the incoming freshman that everything happens for a reason, and, personally, I am extremely happy about how things have ended up my senior year.
Another change I would tell the incoming freshman to expect is a modification in school work! Each year varies in the amount of work in and out of school, but they are all different from junior high. Homework is important to do, especially in classes that one struggles in. For example, I need more academic help in math so I make a point to always to do my math homework and get extra practice if I need it. Also, in high school, grades are more important than one would think. In the future, colleges look at all of your grades to determine whether or not you will be admitted; they even look at the grades from freshman year!
Overall, high school is an adventure all its own, filled with amazing experiences and some that aren’t so great. Nevertheless, I encourage everyone to go in with an open mind and be the best version of themselves they can. When I was entering high school, many people told me the things that happen over these four years, but I never imagined the huge changes coming that made my life what it is today.
