Out-thinking the box by Madelyn - October 2018 Scholarship Essay
There is no doubt that “thinking outside the box” is a common phrase stated among the educated of our world, but how do people do it? Considering there is no actual geometrical figure to think around, my definition of this metaphorical expression signifies to think from a new and unique perspective. The simplicity of this aspect is that it only takes a couple of brain cells and composure to spark a bright idea.
In the past, every one of my English teachers has always wanted students to think creatively and spontaneously with writing assignments, however, I never understood how to do it. Literally, I used to take into consideration various options such as standing outside the classroom or utilizing a box to examine for my paper, but in reality, I knew it was all wrong.
“Thinking outside the box” only takes knowledge and meditation to develop a bright idea. Instead of intentionally transferring everything from my brain to my journal, I take a mile further to view the idea from a different perspective and focus only on the subject itself for quite a period of time. Initially, it means to ponder bigger and better ideas that are rare to be heard of and sound unfamiliar to an audience. For several years now, this aspect has been embedded in my mind, whether it be for a project or essay, I put in all my effort to work around the easiness of other ideas and build my way up to a creative element where some may say is a bit “over-the-top” or “extraordinary”
When people use this common statement in everyday life, I always wonder what the box contains. Obviously, there is something in the box for us to think around, however, that is an idea to deliberate about some other day. Essentially, thinking outside the box is a metaphor to detail creative thinking. More so, it is a term to get motivation out of people to generate thoughts that are extreme and unusual compared to common ones that are usually heard on a day-to-day basis. Ordinary ideas tend to become dull and tedious over time, however, “thinking outside the box” gives individuals a chance to spill something fresh and unheard of as a sign of an intelligent impression. Now, I realize why my teachers consistently mentioned the phrase. Over the years, they grew tired of the “same-old-ideas” being thrown at them.
