What Volunteering Taught Me by Madelyn - May 2018 Scholarship Essay
I volunteered to be a teacher at a local Baptist church in Blanchard, Oklahoma. I was assigned to teach preschoolers about God for a week and attend fun activities with them. I loved every second of it because they are so easily entertained by what they do, I never wanted to go home; I just wanted to spend time with kids and teach them some things. I met wonderful people who volunteered their time as well. I was in 8th grade at the time and was too old for vacation bible school; I also didn't know who or what religion I was, I never got the point of having a religion and serving one god your whole life. on the other hand I pretended to believe it for my grandmother who pushed me to go to church and be a Christian, I guess I'm not that kind of person to push to do something I don't want to, but I pretend anyway to make her happy.
Anyways, I'm getting off subject. volunteering at a Vacation Bible School during summer taught me that we as toddlers were so easily morphed into what religion we are. For example, if your mother and father were the same religion, let's say they practiced Muslim Religion, you'd want to strive to be like them and to do the same to your kids.
Now we live in a world where almost everyone is a different religion. We all want to be different, but in my eyes, all of you are just the same, religion doesn't make who you are, it just makes you think there's a way out of this hell-hole called Earth.
