Do More and Be Better by Madeline - December 2019 Scholarship Essay
Olivia and I dipped our rollers in the pan of white paint and purposefully covered the concrete wall where blue and black letters once conveyed a message to someone who understood the graffiti. The annual painting-over-graffiti activity is one of my favorites that I, as a Bountiful City Youth Council member, help to organize. I met Olivia there at the first activity of the year. She was new and a little bit shy, but fun to be with even when I got paint in her hair. The chance to meet new people and do projects to improve the city are the main reasons I chose to participate with Bountiful City Youth Council.
I can count on walking in to our regular meetings to discussions already taking place on new sources of power, medical marijuana, ACT Test strategies, local government issues, and other thought-provoking topics. I have never been more challenged intellectually than with this group of students whose ideas are as endless as the eggs we fill for the city Easter Egg Hunt. Bountiful City Youth Council instilled in me a love of learning which will be invaluable throughout my life.
Whether putting up fences for the Coats for Kids Car Show, directing people at the Tour of Utah finish line, or cleaning out storage closets at City Hall, I know I will be surrounded by dynamic, motivated youth who inspire me to want to do more and be better. Bountiful City Youth Council is a service organization designed to serve the people of Bountiful. I think the candy we throw out at the parade may be the most appreciated, but in everything we do, the one who really benefits is me.
