#LMDM by Madeline - April 2018 Scholarship Essay
To me, education is what gives me the power to do more with my life. That is why for my educational hashtag I would do #LMDM, which stands for “Learn More, Do More.” Whether its formal education such as going to college or informal education such as learning a lesson from my parents, whatever I learn enables me to do more. It’s like the old saying goes, “you can give a man a fish and feed him for a day or you can teach a man to fish and feed him for life.” The knowledge the man gains from learning how to fish makes his life better.
I think knowledge is one of the most powerful tools we have as human beings. Our ability to learn and expand our knowledge and education makes us more powerful and more in control of our lives. I am going back to school to earn my masters degree because despite all I have learned thus far in my life, I know that gaining more knowledge in a graduate program enables me to do more with my life. Not only that, but the more knowledge I can acquire, the more I can help others, by passing on that knowledge to them. That is why education is so important to me, because it’s not just about learning more but it’s also about being more able to help others. This is not to say that uneducated people lack the ability to help others, because like I stated earlier education doesn’t necessarily come from academic settings. People can be educated in how to be a great mom, friend, or even just a great person. Education is all about learning. It could be about learning new skills, tools, lessons or even experiences. While someone might deem himself or herself as “well educated” there is always more to learn, at least that’s how I feel. When I think about my life and what will happen in the future, there is only one thing I know for certain, I will always learn more so I can do more. #LMDM
