How Athletics has Defined Me by Madelin - September 2015 Scholarship Essay
Participating in athletics outside of school has taught me time management and that every minute is critical to success. When it comes to students who are not involved in activities outside of school, they may find themselves with lots of time on their hands and little to do. These students may get into a bad crowd or not use their time wisely and this is exactly why I have learned to participate in as much that interests me outside of school without going overboard. I have learned my limits by trying to add more and more on to my schedule and realizing what is and what is not important to me.
Particularly athletics has forced me to schedule in my practices, games and scrimmages and make time for everything else around those as well as hours in school. Homework, volunteering, and friends and family are huge parts of my life that I cannot even think about not having time for. Athletic events have made me into the organized and determined woman I am today. I know I must plan the things I need to get done into my schedule, but also be spontaneous and allow for other fun things in the spare time.
Sporting events create a sense of time crunch that may limit others from exhaustion, but has only brought me to life. Athletics has gotten me up and moving, waking myself up each morning to be ready to learn. Not only has athletic stimulated my brain into learning more and being more attentive, but also has created more time by allowing for me to get up earlier and stay up later but still be energetic. I would not be the hard working student I am today without the drive I get from participating in so many extracurricular activities such as athletics and volunteering. These outside tasks have taught me that time is precious and to work with every free second I have.
