Dinner With Freud by Mackenzie - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

If I could have dinner with any historical figure, I would most certainly choose Sigmund Freud. Sigmund Freud is one of the most well known names in psychology. From coining the term “Psychoanalysis” to exploring the subconscious, conscious and unconscious to his famous defense mechanisms theories and so much more, Sigmund Freud has greatly impacted the world of psychology. I would be honored if I was lucky enough to turn back time and have dinner with such a significant part of psychology history.
I was first intrigued to Freud while taking an AP Psychology course last year. From the very first mention of his work I knew he was somebody I would enjoy studying. Freud was big on analyzing why people act the way they do. He explored how the mind works not only on the surface but in the deep sub and unconscious. Freud’s work with defense mechanisms is really what helped me gravitate towards him. I was so intrigued and astonished by the amount of thinking and work he put into psychology and how it all amazingly made sense.
If I could have dinner with Sigmund Freud there would be so much I would want to ask. I would want to know why he first became interested in psychology and how he was able to come to such absolutely outstanding discoveries. I would love to have Sigmund Freud use his own theories to analyze me. I would ask if he always knew I wanted to study the brain and how it works or if it was a spur of the moment thing. I would want to know if he based his theories on his own experience. There’s so much I would want to learn from him if I had the chance.
Sigmund Freud has been a huge inspiration to me ever since I took psychology. I use his work to analyze almost anything I do. From learning about his theories of the human mind I have been able to apply that to almost every aspect in my life. Having dinner with Sigmund Freud would be an experience I would talk about forever. Although most people would pick cliché topics such as George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, I would want to have dinner with someone who impacted my life and inspired me.
