Practice Makes Perfect by Mackenzie - October 2013 Scholarship Essay
Perseverance and dedication can get you anywhere. When I was seventeen, I hosted a private house show for one of my favorite performers, William Beckett, the former lead singer of The Academy Is.... The show itself was a belated birthday gift from my parents. He came to my house in early June for a two hour show, and during the course of that evening, I asked to play guitar with him for a single song, deciding on 'You Never Give Up'. This was a song that I had practiced since it was released the April before, so I knew how to play it with my eyes shut. I believe the fact that I was able to work up enough courage to ask him if I could play a song with him shows that I am definitely willing to take risks regardless of what the outcome may be and then I was able to reflect on the experience. I believe the fact that I played with William helped me grow because it taught me you need to really make sure you know what you're doing at times so you don't mess up - perseverance is everything, because I played everything right, and William was the one that actually messed up his own song, twice. I also believe that it taught me that even though not a lot of people were there to see me play, those that were now know I have a high self-esteem and will always try to be my best in everything I do, even if in the end there is nothing to be gained from it.
