You/Me, from a Different Lens we see! by Mackenzie - March 2024 Scholarship Essay

My mom is the best! She truly is! However, the perspective we have on things can be night and day. We are in different places viewing things from a completely different lens.
I rushed and joined a sorority at school this year. Sounds simple enough. Rush, initiation and boom 400 plus girls are your new friends. Sounds great in theory but hasn’t turned out to be that easy for me.
My mom’s perspective. You have meetings once a week, you do philanthropy projects, you have a big group of girls at your fingertips, start talking, get to know them, introduce yourself, and boom the girl school circle of friends fulfills your college “girl connection” thing.
My perspective. I’m a quieter, more reserved person who wants to make connections and was hoping for them to happen quicker. However, I see cliques, girls who have their established friend groups, they have their social thing with others, and it seems I would be an intrusion.
My mom has encouraged me to get involved in the recruitment process for the Fall. This way, I can meet new girls. I can make some connections. I will have the opportunity to find some girls for me. My dorm this year as a freshman is as far away as you can get, from my sorority house. Next year where I’m living will be a five-minute walk to my sorority house. I am excited about that.
My mom’s perspective and encouragement is helping me to grow by teaching me to keep hope. I’m learning patience and taking her guidance to know that I am in the biggest growth spurt I’ve ever gone through in my life. I know it and I feel it. I am gaining confidence in me.
I can’t wait to see how the “to be continued” works out for me. I know my mom is with me, not by my side literally, but with me every step of the way. I owe the opportunity to her! Her perspective versus mine, is getting me through. I am becoming a better person every day for it! Thanks Mom!
