Plants Become Patients by Mackenzie - May 2023 Scholarship Essay
Many have asked why I have chosen to pursue a degree in nursing. For me this is simple question to answer. The medical field is an ever-growing field that gives you the opportunity to help the patient, be the patient’s advocate and champion for their health and well-being. Becoming a nurse is not a job, it is a career choice that I am determined to be the best nurse I can be.
My love to care for others began several years ago. Entering my room is like entering a jungle. I have plants hanging from the ceiling, draping off dressers and propped on my nightstands. With each new plant, I have made it my duty to care for them and watch them grow. Watching their growth spurts, from a little sprout into big, bold leaves, has always been rewarding to me. Just as with plants, I love taking care of friends and family that surround me. Ever since I was a child, watching Greys Anatomy or Botched with my mom, I was intrigued by the idea of the medical field and how I could make it my job to care for people, just as I do my plants. Watch them heal, grow, and succeed with my assistance.
I had the opportunity to explore the medical field through an internship at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center and fell in love with nursing even more. Being able to observe surgeries, assist patients with meals or just provide the residents companionship has showed me the various opportunities within the nursing field.
After receiving acceptance letters from several nursing schools, my dream is one step closer to becoming my reality. All that remains is the unfortunate stress that comes with college, the financial burden. How can I afford the expenses that comes along with seeking your dream. If I am fortunate enough to be awarded this scholarship, it would ease some of the financial strain. It will allow me to fully focus on my education. I will continue to work hard, maintain my grades while juggling being a student athlete, running track and competing at college level. As I enter nursing school my love for plants will remain, I will just be expanding from pruning plants to being able to care for people.
