The Importance of Education by Mackenzie - March 2018 Scholarship Essay

When sitting down with a second grade student to talk about their future, they typically tend to skip the part about college. They usually go right to what they want to do when they grow up which is usually a movie-star, an astronaut, a chef, or a doctor. Therefore, it is important to remind them what they have to do to get where they want to go. Along with that, the person talking to the student should choose their words wisely and use words they can comprehend.
To begin, I would first ask the student how they think they will become what they want to be. Then, I would start talking about how it's very important to graduate from high school because graduating from high school is the push towards college. I would tell them that yes, it is okay if you aren't sure what you want to be and that it is okay if they don't even want to go to college. However, it will be very hard for them to find work anywhere that gives them a proper amount of money to live off of. It's very important to reassure them that they can receive help along the way of continuing their education.
Moving forward, I would continue the conversation on the subject of how they could have the chance to earn rewards for their hard work at the end of the journey. In that sense, I would tell them how there's going to be a light at the end of the tunnel when they continue their education. With a high school and college degree, it will become easier to find a stable job compared to a student with no high school or college degree. I would want to tell them that it will be a difficult journey and a lot of hard work will have to go into a continued education, but it will be most certainly worth it when it is all said and done.
To end the conversation, I would remind the student that it's okay to not know what they want to be when they grow up, but once they get to the point of continuing their education they should start to explore to discover where they think they belong.
