The Benefits of Studying Abroad by Mackenzie - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
All college students should be required to study abroad at some point during their education. There is a lot more out there in the world that many of us have not seen or experienced. Also, there is no better time to study abroad than during the years at college - where we are full of new ideas and passions and ready to conquer the world. I believe that if every college student studied abroad that it would help open their eyes to all the cultures, languages, and even problems that we can potentially solve in our world.
It is easy to become complacent and think the world is only as big as what you have seen it, but the world is full interesting places and people. You may even think that there is no one out there that even thinks the same way you do, but until you venture out and explore a little bit and meet new people you will never know. Studying abroad will give students the opportunity to push themselves academically in a new setting, and allow for them to enjoy and embrace a new culture. It is also important to study abroad during the college years compared to any other time. For most people college is the point in life where they start forming the type of person they are in the world, and that is why it is important for students to see other parts of the world so they can become well-rounded individuals. Life happens fast, and life after college starts quickly usually with a new job and new responsibilities; therefore, many people end up saying they wish they had time the time to travel or study abroad. That is why colleges should make it mandatory to study abroad, because for many it is the last chance they will be able to.
It is paramount for the next generation of young adults to have a strong understanding of the problems we face daily in our world in order to solve them. Studying abroad would help students learn more from just sitting in the same lecture halls for four years, and it would help students interact with others in a setting outside of their normal comfort zone. The world is a diverse place and studying abroad also helps students become more fluent in a second language. The list of benefits for studying abroad is endless, and that is why college students should be required to study abroad to help further develop their education.
