From Curiosity to Compassion: Pursuing Brain Science for Pediatric Psychiatry by Mackemzie - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

From a young age, I’ve been deeply curious about the human mind—what shapes how we think, feel, and act. This curiosity has grown stronger over the years, guiding me to a future career in pediatric psychiatry. To achieve this, I plan on majoring in Brain and Behavioral Sciences in college. This decision combines my passion for understanding the brain and my desire to help others. By majoring in this field, I will gain the scientific knowledge necessary for medical school and deepen my understanding of how the brain influences behavior, particularly in children. Ultimately, this major will allow me to build a foundation for my career while helping me make a lasting impact on mental health.

As I explored psychology and neuroscience in high school, I was fascinated by how the brain functions and how it impacts behavior, especially in children. I realized that the development of the brain during childhood and adolescence plays a crucial role in shaping a person's future. Mental health challenges in children often go unaddressed, which can lead to long-term struggles. This realization solidified my desire to become a pediatric psychiatrist, specializing in helping children manage their mental health early in life. I want to give children the tools to navigate their emotions and challenges, fostering resilience and better emotional well-being.

The Brain and Behavioral Sciences major is an ideal fit for my aspirations. This interdisciplinary field blends neuroscience and psychology, allowing me to explore the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence behavior. Studying the brain's structure and function will give me an in-depth understanding of mental health disorders, which is essential for my future career. By understanding the underlying mechanisms behind mental health issues, I will be better equipped to diagnose and treat young patients in the future.

Additionally, this major will serve as a solid foundation for pre-medical studies. It covers key subjects such as neuroscience, biology, and psychology, providing the necessary scientific background for medical school. The knowledge I will gain from this major will help me understand both the biological and psychological aspects of health, which is vital for a future psychiatrist. Whether through research or clinical experience, this major will provide me with the tools I need to pursue my medical career.

One of the most compelling reasons for choosing this major is the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of children. Mental health issues in children can affect every aspect of their lives—academic performance, social interactions, and emotional growth. By studying the brain and behavior, I will gain the knowledge to identify the root causes of these challenges and create effective treatment plans to help children overcome them. As a pediatric psychiatrist, I want to provide children with the emotional support and coping strategies they need to thrive, helping them face the challenges of growing up with a sense of hope and resilience.

Moreover, this major will allow me to develop the empathy and understanding necessary to be an effective psychiatrist. By learning about the science behind mental health disorders, I will be able to connect more deeply with my future patients. I will understand the complex factors that influence behavior, which will allow me to approach each patient with a comprehensive, informed perspective. I want to create a safe, supportive environment for children to express their emotions and receive the care they need to feel better. With the knowledge I gain from Brain and Behavioral Sciences, I will be better equipped to offer compassionate care while addressing the root causes of mental health issues in children.

Looking ahead, I am excited to embark on this academic journey because I believe it will allow me to pursue my passion for understanding the brain and make a lasting impact on children’s mental health. By majoring in Brain and Behavioral Sciences, I will gain a deeper understanding of how the brain influences behavior, which is essential for becoming a pediatric psychiatrist. This major will provide me with the knowledge and skills necessary to diagnose and treat mental health issues in children, and ultimately help them lead healthier, happier lives.

In conclusion, my decision to major in Brain and Behavioral Sciences is driven by my passion for understanding the brain and my desire to help others. This major will serve as a stepping stone in my journey to become a pediatric psychiatrist, equipping me with the scientific knowledge and practical skills necessary to make a positive impact on children’s mental health. I look forward to learning more about how the brain works, and I am confident that this major will prepare me to help children overcome mental health challenges and lead fulfilling lives.
