Independence by MacGwire - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

To me, the reason college is so much different than high school is the independence it provides. It forces students to rely on themselves rather than relying on their parents and peers. Independence is the final step on the stairway from childhood to adulthood. I am excited to reach the top of this stairway and I have been taking the right steps in order to do so throughout my high school career. Whether it be pushing myself to take new leadership roles at school, picking up more hours at work, or managing my own funds, I have gradual relied on my parents less and less.
Independence also reveals true character, and true motives. What I do in my free time says a lot about where my intentions really are. these intentions are represented by my impact on my community and success in school. Independent people who take the initiative get good grades and are involved in their community tend to be good people and become good adults. Which is what I strive to be. I am excited to get a taste of what being an adult is like, and to prove to myself and others that I can achieve great things after high school, and I can prove how motivated I truly am. Driven people such as myself thrive when independent. I believe this is because those who have the will, find the way. I have the will and I am more than excited to find the way next year in college as I start the pursuit of my future goals and aspirations.
