The Science of Your Health by Lyric - June 2018 Scholarship Essay

I have taken a lot of electives in my middle school through high school career and most I have thoroughly enjoyed from band and choir to Spanish and Technology. The elective that I have taken that I believe should be a required class is Health Sciences (Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Skills, and Medical terminology). I took this elective in my ninth and tenth grade years, and I will continue the succession of this class in my 11th and 12th grade years. This is a very informative course as it discusses all things health related: the science of medicine, illnesses and injuries along with chronological treatments and symptoms. The most impressive of the course is wellness, how to maintain good standing with your own health. This opened my eyes to the damaging habits that most of us participate in as a daily regime. As longer living human beings, we should know the nature of our own bodies, and become familiar with what conditions some of may have to endure in our lifetimes.
The knowledge students can attain from this class is invaluable, we can apply it to our everyday lives over a lifetime. There is also another aspect to the course: how to respond to health related injury. There's a saying , “If you see something, say something”, but I believe, “If you see something, do something”. Everyday, innocent lives are lost due to inexperienced and uninformed individuals not knowing how to respond to health related situations. By requiring high school students to take Health Science classes, we can act on our acquired knowledge therefor helping to save lives.
By a landslide, this class has been my favorite thus far for many reasons. It has exposed me to the fascination of the medical world, and exposed me to life-saving teachings. Because of the health principles of this course, I learned the pathological processes to several states; constantly causing me to evaluate and prioritize my own healthy choices. Other students who have taken this crucial elective find themselves investing in their own health by correcting their unhealthy ways of managing their health. I have also been able to alert some of my family members of health risks, mostly associated with age. This elective has helped to put me on my path to be a medical doctor. The knowledge I have gained so far has become a true investment in my future. I believe with proper training and teachings on basics of Health Care at such a young age, many people will choose different paths in maintaining great health. Thus, creating healthier alternatives for their families.
