Vacation Bible School by Lydia - December 2019 Scholarship Essay
Growing up in a christian and loving home I always go to Vacation Bible School. I am never forced, but it is just something I love to do. I walk in and get taught the bible stories, excited to see the craft and the snack, and ready to go swimming and canoeing. It was almost a routine. I got to a certain age where I had the opportunity to become a leader. I of course jumped at the opportunity.
The first couple years I enjoyed it. I felt so “cool” because I could yell at some kids and act like the boss. Every middle schooler’s dream. Once I got into high school it became something that was important to me. I was a leader there because those kids needed someone to look up to. They needed someone who was a good christian leader and that would show them the right way. I realized that if I did that I am that person.
One of the biggest questions when you are in high school is, “what is your life going to be like after high school.” I have known that answer to that question ever since I was in elementary school. I want to be a positive influence in children’s lives. I want to be a teacher. At Vacation Bible School you have to work with a wide range of ages and different abilities. You have to be able to work with every single type of situation. I loved every minute of it. Every time Vacation Bible School wraps up I always notice that I was born to help and teach kids. It's not because I can work with them well, I found joy when a child got excited because he stayed inside the lines will coloring or knew the words to one of the songs.
I am definitely not the perfect christian that knows everything in the bible, but I know that one thing I can bring to Vacation Bible School is guidance to the children. When I look back on my life and I have the job I want, I can say that Vacation Bible School has been my number one influencer for being an educator.
