Teaching my Culture by Lydia - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

Being a 17-year-old Hispanic girl in a small Texas town, I stand out. I stand out because I'm not like the majority of my town or my school, which is White. I'm Hispanic and my race is looked down upon because I'm darker and speak Spanish.
Over the years, I have learned to express and love my race and culture. Hispanics have lots of negativity towards them. We get called names and we are often put down by people who see us as people who don't belong. However, I have learned that it's okay to have a darker skin color than most. I have learned that it's okay to speak Spanish. It's okay to be Hispanic.
If I were a college professor, I would teach Hispanic Culture. The Hispanic culture is just as beautiful as any other culture, but it's MY culture. Many don't know much about what it's like to be Hispanic, and I would love to open the eyes of those who want to learn more. I want to teach people about the things I grew up with and how I grew up as a Hispanic little girl. How being Hispanic is amazing and should be expressed, not looked down upon.
