Experience the World: Studying Abroad by Lydia - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” St. Augustine said those fine words more than one hundred years ago and they still ring true today. Would you be able to pass a class having only read one page of the textbook? The world is like that. You need to read many pages to be able to survive and to thrive. Studying abroad would give every student a chance to flip through at least one more page and to learn a little bit more about the world around them.
College is a time that everyone is impressionable. You go from a high school full of people you’ve known for four years, or longer, to a brand new city full of diversity. You learn new things and meet new people, but you can only experience so much diversity on one campus, in one town, in one country. If every student were to study abroad, they would get to experience another culture for at least one semester.
Opening study abroad doors leads to better understanding of everything around you. Students would be able to better understand how others think, which could lead to more peace throughout the world in the future. Students would also understand another culture in a new and deep way. Understanding other cultures would help students to draw closer to those around them and see just how alike people are despite race or background.
While the cultural aspect of studying abroad is extremely important, so is the educational differences. By studying abroad, students would be able to learn in different ways. Students would also have their horizons broadened and be able to take classes they wouldn’t have been bale to take in their home country.
Studying abroad offers a wide variety of options for students to be able to learn more and experience new cultures. If study abroad were required and included in tuition for students, each student would be able to have experiences outside of the country, while still learning and educating themselves.
