The Benefits of Implementing Conservation Work in Our Education Systems by Lucas - June 2025 Scholarship Essay
Education systems should encourage the students that live and learn within them to explore conservation work. People generally spend too much time removed from nature, and it’s been repeatedly proven that spending more time in nature improves a person’s mental and physical well-being. So not only would this kind of work benefit the students, but if it was systematically encouraged across all levels of education, it would have a drastic effect on the health of Earth’s ecosystems.
By working in conservation, people can ensure that future generations of humans and animals alike can have a balanced, healthy world to live in. To start, institutions could implement courses that introduce their students to the benefits of conservation, like an “essentials of conservation” course that introduces them to job opportunities in the field. Additionally, if educational institutions required their students to spend some amount of time caring for wildlife, cleaning polluted areas, and establishing pioneer native species of plant life in their local communities, they would see a drastic improvement in the longevity of all life in their communities and the ecosystems they inhabit. If entire education systems encouraged their students to engage in conservation, the positive impact on Earth’s ecosystems that would follow might save us from the ecological crisis we are growing closer to each day.
By engaging in systematic conservation efforts, humanity would be putting the health of the planet first, which I feel like we are obligated to do. As a species that has totally dominated the world we inhabit, we have a responsibility to treat that world with as much respect and care as we can. If the administrators and staff of an educational institution truly care about providing future generations with the tools they’ll need to build and maintain a brighter future, there is no better way to do it than ensuring that those generations have a healthy planet to improve their lives upon.
