When I think about my future, I imagine a career where I can make a real difference in my community—helping people feel seen, valued, and welcome. That’s why I plan to major in sociology when I get to college.

Sociology appeals to me because it’s all about understanding how people interact, how societies function, and how social issues impact individuals and communities. I’ve always been curious about why people do what they do and how our backgrounds and environments shape our lives. This major feels like the perfect way to explore those questions while preparing for a career where I can positively impact others.

My passion for sociology comes from my own life experiences. Growing up as a first-generation college student, I’ve witnessed how social and economic factors can influence opportunities. My family has faced financial hardships, and seeing the way systemic challenges can hold people back has made me want to understand these issues more deeply. I want to study sociology to learn how to address these challenges and help build a more inclusive, supportive community.

One experience that shaped my interest was volunteering at a senior home, where I noticed how some residents felt isolated and disconnected. It made me think about how social structures can sometimes leave vulnerable people feeling left behind. It’s moments like these that make me want to work toward creating spaces where everyone feels they belong.

I also want a career that allows me to stay flexible and open-minded. Sociology opens doors to various fields, from social work to community organizing, and I value the ability to adapt as I grow. I never want to feel trapped in one path, and studying sociology gives me the freedom to pursue what feels right as I learn more about myself and the world.

Ultimately, I chose sociology because I want to use my education to help others feel welcome and valued. I believe that understanding social issues from different perspectives can lead to more compassionate solutions, and I’m ready to take on that challenge.
