Why I Chose Fashion Design by Lorelei - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

I plan to major in fashion design and fashion merchandising when I start college this fall at the University of North Alabama. For years I had struggled to define what I wanted for a career. I had gone through many phases, dreaming of different jobs that might work for me. I wanted to find a career that I not only enjoy but provided for me in the ways that were needed. It wasn’t until about three years ago that I had an epiphany. Fashion design. If I became a fashion designer, it would check off all of my boxes. It is a job where I can incorporate my creative art skills. It is also a job that I can’t foresee myself falling out of love with. I’ve already started making a few pieces of clothing. While I haven’t yet designed anything myself, having only made things from bought patterns, I am very excited to learn new skills along with further developing my current skills. The University of North Alabama has such an amazing program for fashion design where they are constantly updating the curriculum to match the current trends in the fashion industry. I feel so honored to get to be a part of this program where I believe I will gain all the necessary tools to succeed in becoming a famous fashion designer. I hope that after I learn all that I can from my teachers and classmates at the University of North Alabama, I will have all that is needed to make my dreams come true of becoming something more.
