Preparation for College by Lonnesa - August 2015 Scholarship Essay
As a high school senior for this upcoming school year, I can honestly say that deciding what I want to go to college for has been difficult. I can guarantee you that I am not the only one. College is a big step in our lives and we need to make sure we are preparing ourselves for it. High school is supposed to help us prepare for it. Deciding what classes are best for you and pushing yourself to reach your full potential is important in high school. But students are left clueless on what they actually want to do when they get into college. For this simple reason I would add careers as a subject to help high school students decide what they want to do in college.
College and high school are in two different leagues. The transition can become problematic for some. College freshmen have to adjust to their new independent life. Being unable to find the major right for them can add to their college problems. This can really stress some students out. Some might even want to leave college all together. There are some college students that change their major over three times. You also have those students who might have chosen a major that doesn’t fit them. You might say that these students don’t understand themselves. These are just students that do not know what they are truly interested in.
Having careers as a subject can prevent this. There should be a class just for students to find what they are interested in. In that class, they would learn more about their interest and others so they can understand what the college world has to offer them. This class would be available to freshman. The next classes would be to engage the students with hands on activities on things they are interested in. The class will help students focus on potential majors that might be right for them. For some students, they are still figuring out what their interests are. These classes would be available for sophomores and juniors. The last class would help find potential careers that would fit the student best based on what they want to major in. This class would be provided to seniors only. Every student will not be one hundred percent sure on what they are going to do when college comes, but they will at least have an Idea.
Adding this to the high school curriculum can really help take some stress off of students when they get into college. High school is the last and most critical education level when it comes to preparation for college. It is important to have a good curriculum. School doesn’t only prepare you for college, it prepares you for life. I am not saying that changing your major is wrong. I am saying that having an idea on what you want to do can help prevent changing majors. There is nothing wrong with planning your future early.
